About Chris
Chris grew up on the South Coast but has lived and worked in the East End of London for the last thirty years. Largely self-taught his cultural education was formed in East London in the late seventies, against a backdrop of strongly polarised political conflict and change.
His influences are shaped by memory, both personal and those of others. The east end and it’s ever increasing diaspora, with it’s tradition of radicalism, experimentation and innovation are crucial to his work. The social structure of the east end is fragmented as much as it is unified. Immigration, integration, conflict and movement are all studied via his images. A building, a pedestrian, a car, a scrapyard……a matrix of ciphers that present a running commentary.
About ‘Hackney Archives’
“My starting point for subjects and themes is usually a historical context, this may be a collection of images from an archive or a text from a specific location or source….an overheard remark on a bus, or a distorted recollection from youth. The intention is to create an ongoing document of the area that is both universal and personal.
I make a collection of images with the specific intent that they eventually become an archive themselves and develop the full potential within it, meaning, that they will be more interesting in the future than they are now. I try to anticipate change in the physical and social environment and make an image at the point where the transformation is inevitable. Sometimes I like to recreate or re-interpret, shift the context slightly. Make the same image over and over and show them side by side.”
