Great use of split screens in this 70s experimental film. More on the directors via the National film board of Canada website. Found via , a great little website from MIT and IDFA DocLab with some historical uses of multimedia, interaction and particpation and other things that we often think are ever so modern.

I love work, and it looks really fun to make. He obviously loves the aesthetics of science and science experiments but also loves the science itself, his best work is that which shows this understanding, and wonder.
Above: Crowbar with Plumb Bob, 2007. Below: Bubble Contraption, 2008, Kettle with PingPong Ball, 2010, Wooden Box with Horseshoe Magnet, 2006 all from ‘Demonstrations’
Do check out his other projects on his , to see his latest, which are doing the rounds in the US, see .

The wonderful autocromes of Léon Gimpel, are something I refer to for inspiration for colour grading, and post production palettes. (See !) But I hadn’t come across these mushroom studies before, and I love the floating effect you get from the pin mounting and shallow depth of field. .

Fascinating example of when one form inspires another and the interest in the resulting work actually lies in the incompatibility of the two mediums.
This huge project takes the aesthetic developed by many 3D mapping events but creates it physically, quite a jaw dropping feat, made possible by the car sponsorship.
The ‘making of’ below shows the scale of the thing.

Some wonderful released by the fantastic Artangel, recordings from John Berger & Simon McBurney’s collaboration from 1999, The Vertical Line; an early site specific art piece, taking place during a journey down some spiral steps to the then disused Strand underground station. A combination of sound, visuals and performance its a journey through history, place and memory.

I’m fascinated by role models, the way that people idolise and simplify people to create a sort of map of ways to behave. So I love the collectors mentality of these images by Patti Smith and I love the fact that Patti Smith took them. In an (regarding the exhibition these images were part of last year) she says:
“When I’m traveling with my camera, I’ll often take pictures of, you know, Keats’s bed, Shelley’s grave or Victor Hugo’s desk. It has something of them. If I’m taking a picture of Brancusi’s grave, I know that there’s something of him, of his mortal remains, beneath my feet, and there’s something beautiful about that.”
The article goes on to say….
Smith said she often organizes her tours around excursions in search of that kind of memorial beauty, seeking out places associated with the writers and artists she admires and with whom she feels a kinship that transcends mortality. The photographs in the Hartford show — black-and-white silver gelatin prints made from Polaroid negatives, small and square and in soft focus — are culled from a collection that documents hundreds of encounters with worldly effects transformed into sacred relics. A fork and a spoon that belonged to Arthur Rimbaud, the French symbolist poet who has been one of Smith’s touchstones forever. Mapplethorpe’s bedroom slippers and the tambourine he made for Smith. A chair that belonged to the Chilean novelist Roberto Bolaño. William S. Burroughs’s bandanna. A replica of a life mask cast from the features of William Blake.
